When decorating or redecorating your space, it pays to keep a few dos and don’ts in mind. Here’s a list of tips and tricks to take note of before attacking your home with paintbrushes, cushions and throws.
DO: Figure out your own sense of style. Do you go gaga over ornate details like florals, gold trim and pretty decorative tins, or is it chunky industrial furniture and huge retro artworks that get your heart racing? Choose your favorite style and go with it.
DON’T: Incorporate all your interests into one space. Sometimes it can be difficult to choose just one style of decorating, but try to stick with one theme per room. Your Balinese-style curtains, checkered pop art rug, and miniature antique statues from Japan may clash a little if they’re all thrown into the same room…
DO: Enlist the help of a trusted friend if you need a second opinion. Sometimes making a big decision is difficult on your own, so ask a friend who has a good design eye.
DON’T: Consult your friends on EVERY decision you make, or force them to visit every single decorating store with you. You’ll need to make some decisions on your own, so trust that you’ll make the right ones!
DO: Look at interior design blogs for inspiration. There are so many gorgeous blogs on the web, and a quick scroll through a couple of them will have your heart racing. Take note of trends, color combinations and DIY projects that take your fancy. Of course, Pinterest is a great tool for keeping track of visual inspiration.
DON’T: Go over your budget ordering expensive designer furniture and décor. You can always find cheaper, high quality alternatives for the pieces you love, so shop around before committing to a purchase.
DO: Think about where you live, your lifestyle, and the climate of the area you live in. If you live somewhere like Vale, where it’s generally warm and sunny, it’s probably not the best idea to fill your home with furs, fluffy rugs, thick fabrics and dark colors – unless you want to be spending a fortune on the air-conditioning bill to keep your home cool! Instead, think light, breezy and fresh if you live in a warmer climate.
DON’T: Be afraid to incorporate mismatching styles and a few color clashes here and there. A room that’s too “matchy-matchy” can be boring and predictable.
DON’T: Follow “dos” and “don’ts” lists too strictly – remember, it’s your home, so if you like the way it looks, then go for it! You’ll be more happy living in a space that reflects your own personal flair.
